Nige’s 2020 Round-up

It won’t be a surprise if I kick off this article with – “Well, it’s been quite a year hasn’t it?’

Everybody is saying the same thing, because none of us have known a period like the last 9 months. But, there have been some positives.

I never thought I would miss the morning drive to work or spending money on fuel, but working from home has changed everything.

Don’t get me wrong, there are some lovely upsides. During the first lockdown in Spring it was quite a novelty being at home, having a sandwich in the garden at lunchtime and spending more time with the family. But this last month or so with dark mornings and evenings and some atrocious weather, it’s enough to drive a man to drink!

We’re a sociable bunch at The Dairy and we all enjoy the banter that comes with the agency environment. I think we’ve all missed that and so the sooner we can get back to our lovely Victorian villa in West Bridgford, working as a team in person rather than by Zoom or Google Meet, the better.

It’s been a tough year for all small businesses and we’re no different. We have seen some clients reduce their marketing spend with us and some have left all together. This has put a dent in our turnover for 2020 and has meant that we have had to tighten up on our expenditure – so no all night Christmas party for us this December!

It is a real shame because we had been growing rather nicely in recent years and had been working with an external business coach to deploy a plan for even more growth over the next three years. It feels like we simply need to regroup and start again.

But we have a great team and a tried and tested service offering – so I am confident for the future. After 18 years in business (and a frightening 40 years in the marketing and advertising world!) I know that the one thing we can expect is ups and downs. Life is never easy and running a business certainly isn’t – but it is one of the most rewarding things you can do. Note to startups this year – don’t give up!

We’ve always enjoyed a healthy inbound stream of potential work and encouragingly, that has actually carried on. Not every project or account is right for us but we love meeting new people and we’ve worked on some fantastic client projects this year including the British Psychological Society, Security Monitoring Centres, the Woodhead Construction Group, The University of Nottingham and our friends in Germany at Kinder in Not (Children in Need) to name a few.

We also have some great new business names and brands to announce that we will be working with in 2021, so keep your eyes peeled for that!

I want to thank my team at The Dairy for their hard work and commitment in 2020. It has been very trying at times but the guys have stuck at it and worked hard to put us in a position now to get stuck into 2021.

So to sum up – it’s been a really odd time and we sincerely hope that the Covid era is coming to an end. There is light at the end of the tunnel and we will be here doing what we do, now and beyond that time.

Thanks to all of our clients and partners that we rely on – 2021 will be better and we look forward to seeing you all in person at some point soon!

Merry Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year to you all.
